Leading Change in 2017

Last year when I presented at FlipCon on the Gold Coast I started off with a statement. This statement was “Fail to Plan and you plan to Fail”.Fail to plan plan to fail

As I look forward to 2017 and reflect on the year that has almost gone these words ring so true. I did plan last year in general terms of what I wanted to achieve in my job and for my students but in the end I haven’t achieved as much as I would have liked to and if I am honest with myself some of this is through not enough in depth planning.

So again as I look forward to 2017 I am going to take my own advice and plan more. In reviewing some of the PD that I have attended in the last couple of years I came across this graphic adapted from Knoster, T (1991) on leading complex change. Continue reading

Presenting on Flipped Learning at FlipConAus 2015

flipconaustralialogo

I recently undertook a challenging experience and presented at the national FlipCon Australia conference on the Gold Coast ( #FlipConAus). It was an amazing experience in personal growth, reflection and networking.

I presented 2 workshops: “How we flipped and you can too” and also “Flipping for Free”.

You might ask how I ended up facing this challenge, well in simplest terms it was with a very firm shove. I was approached by my previous principal at the beginning of this year with a flyer to apply for a presenters spot at the conference and my initial response was sure I want to go but surely I am not qualified enough to present at a conference like this.

Previously I have run numerous professional development and workshops but these tend to be at a school level not “national”. However with much encouragement I applied to present and much to my astonishment I was accepted, which caused me to reflect on the fact that maybe I did have experience that was worth sharing with other like minded individuals.

When I arrived at the conference for the pre-workshop day (a totally invaluable experience) I was astounded at the scope of representations attending the conference. For some reason I had imagined that it would mainly be Queensland educators and in the first hour I learnt that attendees had travelled from all other states to be able to network and plan for a future that incorporated flipped teaching into their classroom.

On my first day I attended a full day workshop run by Joel Speranza (@joelbsperanza), and I was inspired by the depth of knowledge that he presented and the quality of his presentation. In the mean time I was also conscious of the fact that this was what I was going to be “competing” against in my workshops. In this one day I learnt plenty and was able to reflect on my practice. Thanks to Joel I gained new perspectives on aspects of flipped learning and how it can be incorporated into classroom practice in way that I hadn’t considered and also consolidated for me that I was well on my way in my flipped teaching journey.

My first session presented my thoughts about planning for a successful flipped classroom. This was the session that I felt most confident about and you can see a great synopsis here: https://c21stteaching.wordpress.com/2015/11/11/flipconaus-review-day-three-part-one/ Continue reading

About Me

Welcome to my Blog on everything education in the 21st Century.

My name is Crystal Caton, and I have created this blog to share my journey through navigating the best way to educate our 21st century learners. I hope that through my journey I will give my fellow educators not only ideas to incorporate into their teaching but also the courage to go against the norm so that they can provide what our students need to prepare them for the world that they will grow and work in.

A little about me:

  • I am a mum to 2 beautiful children Miss 6 and Master 2 and wife to my husband Shaun.
  • I am a secondary teacher trained in Mathematics and Science
  • I am currently the Head of Department for Mathematics at a Queensland State School
  • I have previously been a Head of Department for Science, Maths, ICT, Technology over various positions.

Overall I still consider myself to be relatively new to the position of teaching however in my position find myself required to lead those that have far more experience than me and suggest the course of action that will see the best results for our students. It is my belief as an educator and teacher that all we do should be for the benefit for the students that we teach and I reflect on this with each new endeavour that I embark on.

Feel free to follow me on twitter @cmcaton as I learn to use this invaluable resource to develop my education connections throughout the world.

I hope that you enjoy reading my Blog and that it helps you to be courageous!!

Crystal
